Do we have to choose between joy and wealth?
Then, I decided to make more money and found myself sacrificing doing what I love.
It wasn't supposed to work like that. Setting up my own business was supposed to allow me to do more of what I love, but I got so bogged down with admin and marketing I did less of the work I love than in any job.Is this the cleft stick you find yourself in?
Firstly then, let's ask "What is wealth?"
Is it money to you or is it something more?
For me, doing what I love represents being wealthy, since that carries with it the fact that I am free to make choices about how I run my life.
It requires a certain amount of financial security, but it isn't just about
money, it is about the freedom that having enough money brings.
It's not just
that either though. There are plenty of people with plenty of money who have
very little joy in their lives.
These are who I used to see when I thought of
what I would have to do to myself to make lots of money.
I thought about it so much I made it happen and then in reaction to that I stopped making any money at all for a while. This didn't help!
These days I am more balanced about it.
Which is what I feel in my bones to be real wealth for me.
There's
a continuum, at one end is an impoverished artist, who just manages to survive,
perhaps receiving their necessities in exchange for their work. Happy as Larry
creating with no material possessions (perhaps with a family who adore them but all dressed in tatters) and at the other end is a dissatisfied
industrialist who is miserable, with no family life and hated by their
employees. Probably their factories belch out pollution and they are hated by
everyone around them. But they have every material thing they want.
In
between are all manner of lifestyles.
So what do you love to do,
to have?
For some it might mean being a parent and spending
time with your children, for some it might be doing business, for some dancing
or painting, maybe connecting people, maybe seeing a job well done.
There are so many variations
Some of these options will mean you
prefer to have a traditional job and others that you don't.
It's up to you.
What do you need to do to gain the power in your life to make
these choices?
